The culture of rap battles emerged almost concurrently with the birth of rap. Believed to have started in the East Coast Hip-Hop scene of the late 1980’s, two participants take to a stage to compete. Each one will take turns to “diss” the other, in which one competitor insults another through lyrical rhyming; or compete through freestyle lyrics exchanged between MCs. In Brazil, it was no different. With the popularization of the hip-hop genre in the country in the early 1990’s, soon after the rap battle culture started to grow. However, it wasn’t until 2003 that they started to become more organized and developed into more professional competitions with the emergence of the Batalha do Real event in Rio de Janeiro.

The group was created to hold and promote street art, musical and other cultural events in and around the city of Artur Nogueira, as a response to the local Governments lack of support for the arts.
