Hello my name is Troy Carlton and I have created this painting while listening to the music of Ornette Coleman – Something Else.. Ornette was a pioneer in bringing more exploratory elements to jazz. He in some ways against the then current tastes in music kind of single handedly went his own way. This was his first record he recorded as a leader. At this point he was playing pretty straightforward. But was also a hint of what was to come. I get a very positive and relaxed feeling while listening to this and it was my attempt to convey that unto the canvas. I hope I was successful and that you also enjoy it.
Troy Carlton was born and raised in Flint Michigan. Before turning his focus on expression through painting he expressed himself through playing music. As a lifelong musician, he also created abstract watercolors. At some point through his journey, he began using acrylic paints as his medium. Music as it always had been playing a role in the creation of his work. Before beginning new work he selects a record and allows the record to inform him of a feeling he then translates unto the canvas. His work has been described as a stream of consciousness mindscapes. And also emotional environments. His attempt through abstraction is to engage you with a feeling and allow the painting to take you on a journey.
